Flood damaged two of five city wells

July 26, 2022  By Ground Water Canada

Merritt, B.C. – Extensive flooding in the fall of 2021 led to the loss of two of the city’s five wells that accounted for the municipality’s entire water supply. One of the affected wells, however, is on pace to be operational again.

The damaged wells were both located in Merritt’s Voght Park. They were contaminated by flood waters, silt and debris. Although the pipe system stood intact with both wells, the control system suffered damage. One lost a flow meter while the other lost its housing structure, monitoring equipment, and pump drive.

Well No. 1 is being flushed, disinfected and fully repaired. It is expected to be operational later this week once testing is complete.
